Part of our ongoing series of capsule collections of non-superwash yarn in limited palettes inspired by nature.
the // warmth // collection comprises ten shades, dyed on the perfect sweater yarn bases...
smeeth | sport is a 3-ply yarn woollen-spun from Corriedale fibre into a lofty, airy, yet sturdy yarn. With 300m per 100g skein, it is a standard sport weight but its gorgeous lofty spin means it knits to a DK/worsted gauge perfectly too, making it incredibly versatile and good value for larger projects. We love it for sweaters and cardigans but it also makes cosy hats, scarves, and mitts.
smeeth | fingering is a lighter weight 2-ply construction with 450m per 100g skein and we're searching out all the fair isle/Shetland colourwork patterns for this one! It's got the same wollen-spun lofty, airy construction and is just as versatile as its sport weight sibling. We're knitting this on 2.75mm needles to create a warm, dense fabric for traditional colourwork garments but it also knits up beautifully on 3.25/3.50mm needles to a sport weight gauge for an airier, lighter (but still soft and cosy) fabric. We're offering this weight ready-to-ship in 25g (approx 112m) mini-cakes making it ideal for stranded/colourwork knits. You can also order 100g skeins dyed-to-order for your perfect main colour/contrast colour combinations.
We've dyed ten shades, taking inspiration from lime pickle, hot cocoa, marmalade on toast, steaming bowls of porridge, and much more for endless two, three, and four shade combinations for colourwork and stripes, as well as each shade working perfectly on its own...
porridge ~ a warm taupe beige with hints of silver grey, and warm chestnut
sage ~ cool blue green aqua with subtle tonal variation
pickle ~ zingy chartreuse with lime and ochre undertones
marmalade ~ warm, rich, deep burnt orange
kelp ~ murky olive green with drab khaki tones running through it
cocoa ~ rich warm chocolate brown with cinnamon undertones.
mustard ~ a warm yellow with gold undertones and lovely depth
mole ~ cool woody tones with subtle variation, a lovely 'dark neutral'.
slate ~ soft blue-grey with 'air force' notes and hints of duck egg.
tangerine ~ lively golden orange with hints of amber and egg yolk.
Non-superwash yarn can require a little more thought and attention to care but the rewards are plentiful! Fibres that haven't been superwash treated tend to have more memory, bite, and structural interest, and the lack of chemical/processing intervention makes them better for the environment.
Alongside the ready-to-ship yarn, we've made all the shades available dyed-to-order, so you can purchase just what you like, in the exact quantities you need, for whatever project you have in mind. Dyed-to-order skeins will be dispatched within 10 working days. We will never mix dye batches without consulting you first...
