A micro~collection inspired by four places I know and love, conjured from the colours and moods and images evoked and imprinted...

Dyeing the impromptu ~ dunwich heath ~ shade from the memory of a late-afternoon, late-summer walk, made me realise that the places I love have colour palettes attached to them in my imagination! Those palettes are built from moods, historical knowledge, fragments of moments in my memory, of ancient people and family picnics, of weather and season, and of course, of landscape.

So, I took four of my favourite places in Suffolk and headed to the dye pots without a mood board, or a photograph, or anything physical to work from. I just dyed from memory.

~ Southwold Harbour ~ muddy river banks, peeling yacht hulls, gulls swooping for discarded chips, streaky pink sunset skies, silhouettes of huts and winches. The ends of perfect days...

~ Orford Ness ~ military relics, secrets, shingle, sea and sky merging, the memory of a lighthouse, rusting metal, wading birds, estuary air..

~ Sutton Hoo ~ ancient people, replica swords and dog walks, a winding river view, woodland paths, that mask!, burial mounds and gun  metal skies, the wind blowing in from the river...

~ Rendlesham Forest ~ bracken and pine needles, bark and falling leaves, piles of logs, play equipment and picnics, UFOs!, mysterious lights as the sun sets, trees as far as you can see...

Alongside the four variegated shades there are also four semi-solids,. Designed to mix and match with any/all of the above for stripes and marks and shawls and colourful fun! Soft raspberry, a lavender leaning mid-grey, sage green, and a warm toffee gold. Coming up with semi-solids is one of the hardest parts of developing a micro-collection. The pressure to include the perfect hues, a coherent palette, to bring the whole collection to life! They are more than the sum of their parts.

pightle | fingering/4ply our go-to fingering weight superwash merino yarn. Perfect for lightweight garments, shawls and accessories. It takes dye beautifully creating vibrant nuanced shades that glow.

We dye Pightle in small batches using a combination of kettle dyeing for semi-solid and tonal shades and low-immersion and hand-painting for variegated shades that will 'pool' or 'flash' depending on gauge. Even within a dye batch, each skein is unique as a result of our dyeing techniques.

Although Pightle is a superwash fibre, we recommend hand washing in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye.

As with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.

We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and to reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
