#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.

The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...

I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.

September – it's been a summer of dramatic weather here in Suffolk. From parched yellow fields, to country lanes underwater, and lots of storms! I love a summer storm, they appear out of nowhere, as the wind whips up, and they're over in a (quite literal!) flash as the sun breaks through the rolling bank of purple-black clouds. And that light is magical! The acid lime greens of the hedgerows and trees against the dark backdrop of storm clouds always has me reaching for my camera.

I couldn't resist reaching for the fluffy bray | lace to capture that patch of palest silvery grey, backlit and shining like a portal to somewhere magical, and the mohair/silk blend, with all the sheen and subtle nuance I was hoping for, is called skyLight. Our single-ply BFL base gleamy | singles with its textural crinkle and faint fuzzy halo was the perfect choice for stormLight, a combination of lime, moss, and forest greens with the contrasting indigo-tinged charcoal.

As usual, there are a couple of batches of each in the stock crate and if demand exists, I'll leave pre-orders open and dye more next week to send by Monday, September 29th.

We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.

We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
