#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.

The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...

I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.

October – did somebody say Autumn? I've mostly been photographing trees, hedgerows, and leaves on my morning dog walks this week becaus the foliage is changing by the minute! It looks set to be a pretty spectacular season and with the bright sunshine we've also been having so far this month, the leaves are looking wonderful. Bright red field maple, pinky gold blackthorn, and of course the majestic oak as it fades from deep verdant green to gold, via the softest olive, and glowing amber...

Golden Oak combines the glowing amber with hints of fresh green, russet and the milky aquamarine sky that we're relishing as the days get noticeably shorter. Olive Oak makes the most of the softly fading foliage as it clings to those last drops of chlorophyll.

Both shades are dyed on hoo | sock becuase we're also right in the middle of Socktober and it's definitely not too late to cast on a new pair! If socks aren't your thing, we think these would work beautifully together in a shawl...

As usual, there are a couple of batches of each in the stock crate and if demand exists, I'll leave pre-orders open and dye more next week to send by Monday, October 27th.

We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.

We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
