#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
November – I'll never not be transfixed by a stunning sunset and this was a stunning sunset. Irresistible! I took the inspiration photo from just outside our studio door having watched the colours deepen and develop, like an image being magically 'colourised', from my desk.
The first shade is called world on fire and I dyed it on nest | fingering, our glorious 50/50 non-superwash merino/silk blend. It has the most amazing sheen and the combination of vivid coral, zingy orange, pastel peach, pink, and lavender is my attempt to capture the vivid array of saturated sunset tones and delicate highlights amongst the clouds as the sun sank rapidly behind the trees.
An indigo blanket takes all the grey, plum, and indigo shades that were present in the heavy blanket of cloud that had obscured the sun all day but lifted just enough to let that fiery sunset emerge! Dyed on our gorgeous fluffy kid/silk blend – bray | lace – it is the perfect companion for the smooth shiny silk of nest | fingering, or works perfectly on its own...
As usual, there are a couple of batches of each in the stock crate and if demand exists, I'll leave pre-orders open and dye more next week to send by Monday, October 27th.
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
