If ready-to-ship skeins sell through quickly, I'll leave pre-orders open until Monday morning (19th) and dye more batches that will be ready to dispatch by Tuesday 27th May.
#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
May – I couldn't really have been inspired by anything else this month... we've been blessed with the most amazing weather through April & May, here on the East Coast. So much sunshine, blue sky, warm but not too hot. It's been perfect (although I know the local farmers and growers are already desperate for rain!) and it has created the most bountiful season for blossom and spring flowers for quite some time. The hedgerows are just laden under the weight of the hawthorn blooms but it's the cow parsley that steals my heart at this time every year, and I'm pleased to report that the long farm track that leads to our new house is lined with it, as is the meadow that we walk along morning, noon, and night with the dog, or just to get some air (but obviously with the dog then too because walking along the meadow without the dog is a serious offence, and she always knows!)
Both shades are dyed on pightle | fingering/4ply this time, as both soft pastels and bold brights just sing on this yarn base and I wanted to go for both options! cow parsley season is a ~flash~ shade inspired directly by the sage green and fresh lime stems and glowing, ethereal blooms bathed in golden light from a slowly sinking sun, that created pastel pink, lavender, and soft apricot tones. The second is everything else! The hedgerows, the grass, the fresh green leaves on the mighty oak trees... everything went green!
pightle | fingering/4ply is our trusty 100% superwash merino base that is perfect for lightweight garments and accessories and takes colour beautifully to create soft tonal transitions on variegated shades and vibrant saturated semi-solids.
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
