#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
June – summer has arrived all at once this year, or so it feels! A frenzied rush of hot sun, thunderstorms, cool morning sunrises, sweltering nights, and it's all bright, so, so bright! The lush fresh greens of May have made way for sandy gold, pale sage, and burnished bronze, and this is never more evident than in the early evening light, as the sun dips and casts its golden glow across the meadow... It's a magical hour and as the heat of the day dissipates there is nothing I like more than wandering through the long grass, breathing in the honeysuckle scent, and trying to capture the beauty of it all with my camera.
I've broken the rules again this month and dyed two different bases. The first, embracing that warm golden light, is gleamy | singles, our newest base and a lovely single-ply, superwash Bluefaced Leicester that takes dye beautifully creating nuanced blended shades with the characteristic crinkle of single-ply yarn. It's called the golden hour. The second shade felt like it needed a fuzzy halo to properly capture the hazy soft light of the fading summer sky. So, I dyed bray | lace, our classic kid/silk laceweight blend, and called it bleached-blue.
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
