#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
December – I've loved dyeing shades inspired by light this year. Different sources, the way it changes colour, plays with colour, and creates colour where there was previously none... and I've been waiting patiently for this final edition, when the tree would be an obvious source of inspiration!
Twinkling retro-style lights against a backdrop of grey-blue/green spruce. Vibrant periwinkle, violet, cherry red, and gold with all the shades of lavender, burnt amber, teal, and forest green in between. The ~flash~ shade is called fairy lights and I'll be totally honest, I wasn't entirely sure that this shade was going to end up anywhere close to the vision I had in my mind when I started applying dye to yarn but as is often the case with these 'on the fly' shades, I mixed and poured, and waited, and contemplated, and mixed some more, and poured some more, and wouldn't you know, I love this shade! It's vibrant and complex with subtle silvery lavender and pink among the honey, plum, violet and teal.
The second shade has all the grey-green, blue-green, sage, and forest tones of a classic spruce. The perfect foil for glitter and sparkle, and a shade of green that works with cool and warm contrasts. This one is called evergreen. Both are dyed on hoo | sock and there are a couple of batches ready-to-ship in the shop, with more skeins primed to dye-to-order if required!
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
