#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
August – the harvest is nearly done and the evenings are noticeably drawing in (there, I said it!), but the bats are still whizzing around at dusk, the swallows are busier than they've ever been, and we're starting to welcome the first of the giant spiders into the house! August has felt like a month of critters and creatures here and when Chris called me to say there was a fabulous moth hanging out on the bathroom window, I knew I'd found my skeinLight inspiration. Thanks to Chris for the superb photo and to the Latticed Heath moth (not a wool-munching variety, so no need to panic on my behalf!) whose amazing dappled gold wings, against the diffused sky/grass/foliage canvas, made for some very pleasing dye pots.
Both shades are dyed on hoo | sock this time; the first is a combination of dirty gold, bronze, lime, chartreuse and sky blue and is called the outside on the inside, while the second picks up that lovely jade/teal tone in the frosted window glass, and is called backlight.
As usual, there are a couple of batches of each in the stock crate and if demand exists, I'll leave pre-orders open and dye more next week to send by Monday, September 1st.
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
