The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
It's that time of year when I get the sudden urge to scour the bookshelves for a ghost story! I'm a big fan of well-crafted tales of haunted houses and supernatural encounters, and there's something about the genre that lends itself particularly well to short form fiction... a concise short story or novella seems to distil the chill into something even more haunting! The Woman in Black by Susan Hill is a classic in the genre and I couldn't resist a quick re-read as the evenings draw in and the early morning fields are cloaked in mist. As a former 'marshland' resident Eel Marsh House, the focus of this creepy tale, always struck a chord and the tragic tale of Arthur Kipps and the Drablow family still sends a chill through me after several encounters!
There's a description of a withered bunch of roses on a grave that particularly caught my imagination as I read, and while I'm not really a fan of the commercial monster that Halloween has become, it is a good excuse to indulge in a good old fashioned ghost story - and then fire up the dye pots !I've created a pair of shades that attempt to capture the essence of the symbolic bouquet of decaying flowers, petals fading to russet, brown, and dirty mauve but still beautiful...
I've dyed a couple of batches of nest | fingering and bray | lace and though they are each fabulous on their own, I think they will be stunning knit together. There are just a handful of each and the shades grew so organically in the pan, with layers of bronze, oak, plum, and rich wine before being glazed with dusky rose as a final flourish, that I fear it will be almost impossible to recreate them. So once these are gone, that's it!
Our 'currently reading' micro-collections are limited edition shades inspired by the book currently on my bedside table.
Each collection comprises just a handful of shades, dyed on a variety of yarn bases and is released as I'm reading a book I'm loving.
Please note - this limited edition collection does not qualify for our 'sweater quantity' discount.
