Ripeness by Sarah Moss
Edith, the down to earth daughter of a Bohemian mother, and sister of a dancer, recalls a trip to Italy in the 1960's to help her sister through the final weeks of her pregnancy, She's now in her 70's and living in Ireland when her best friend discovers a long-lost brother. Ripeness is a story of travel, of migration, of belonging, and of family
I'm savouring this book, trying not to gallop through it, but just a few short chapters in and already the dye pots are calling. I'm planning to add to this micro-collection as I read and the inspiration strikes!
The first two shades find Edith wandering through a village on the banks of Lake Como early one summer morning. The honey rendered houses and sparkling blue lake frame an encounter with a ripe pear and a man named Edward...
bees had gathered is dyed on furze | singles, our soft, smooth merino/mohair blend with its amazing sheen and very faint halo and it combines honey gold with flashes of lavender, coral and warm terracotta.
in Italian light is dyed on aker | lace, our fluffy suri alpaca/silk blend and is a blue/green/turquoise semi-solid, the colour of the water sparkling through the soft morning haze...
A third shade...
alpine summer is a fluid pastel blend of rosy pink, taupe, soft grassy green, and palest lavender. Inspired by Edith's hot summer hike up a sun-baked Italian hill, with views across to the still snow-tipped alps.
The final three shades, inspired by my slow summer read... As the story draws to a close, Edith dresses for the Irish summer weather and takes a walk up a very different hill. She rescues a moth from a tiny pool of rainwater, collected in a dip in the rock, as she sits contemplating sisterhood, friendship, and lost family.
sunlight into energy is a soft minty grey green, the palest softest shade of lichen on limestone, with a warm taupe beige flash and a very occasional rusty copper freckle...
spring taking hold blends deep mossy green with a cool jade tinged green, blending into fuchsia pink, violet, and coral with a soft honey flash.
the world making itself is a joyful silky, fluffy combination of violet, lavender, heather purple, rosy coral, and maroon.
