We found ourselves strolling along the tide line at Walberswick on a gloriously sunny Saturday morning in mid-November, the sea flat calm and a low sun tracing an iridescent path to the glowing horizon...\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDyed on pightle | fingering\/4ply, \u003cstrong\u003enever shone the sun as fair,\u003c\/strong\u003e is imbued with all the shades of indigo, teal, sea-green, and aqua that we saw echoing a blue sky. There's just a hint of rosy-pink and violet picked out from the fabulous sun-path that led our eyes to the horizon. The name is from a poem by Edward Thomas called 'There's Nothing Like the Sun'. A poet who was killed in France in 1917, he didn't write 'war poems' as such, but this is poignant read in the context of his life. It is about precisely the feeling that the sun inspires in November; when the swallows have left, the last of the fruit has been picked from the trees, and the sun feels even more special for it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second shade picks out the rich sandy gold, cool sage green, and milky sky-blue of the sand dunes that frame the beach. Walkberswick is our go-to beach for a late afternoon swim and picnic at the end of a hot summer day (although those were few and far between this year!) and we could have nestled in the dunes on this November day if we'd had a flask of tea, gloves and a woolly hat! The coast is eroding fast along this stretch of Suffolk and these dunes have yet again been remodelled by a high tide and strong Easterly. Whether we’re walking the dog in deepest midwinter, picnicking on an almost-warm-enough Spring afternoon, or taking a dip at the end of a long, hot, summer’s day, the sea is always beautiful and there’s always treasure to be found…\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTwo shades each month throughout 2023, dyed on a variety of yarn bases and using our favourite dye techniques - one inspired by the sea itself, and one by the beautiful things we find along the shore.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDecember\u003c\/strong\u003e – When I set out on my year of yarn inspired by the sea I did have a small concern that it might be dominated by shades of grey and brown – we do, after all, live adjacent to the North Sea, not renowned for its crystalline turquoise, or even 'sea green' water! I needn't have worried; looking back through the eleven-month archive there is a lot of green, aqua, jade – and even blue – because it turns out that the sea is just as nuanced and ever-changing as the sky it sits beneath. This month is grey though! We walked along the shore line at Walberswick as the clouds sat low and heavy and leaden grey and although there were also spectacular sunrises, wild windy days filled with scudding clouds and starlit calm seas to choose from this month, I decided to honour the true essence of the North Sea we know and love with this final instalment. Dyed on pightle | fingering\/4ply I've called it \u003cstrong\u003ethe grey below\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI switched to hoo | sock for the second shade, and the inspiration came from a walk along Dunwich beach the day after one of the big storms we've had recently. Depending on the wind direction and the tides, a storm along this coast can either give or take away. Sometimes, the sand is scoured and washed away, and the beaches are bare after a big storm, other times they are strewn with treasure, and on a bright Sunday morning, we walked along a strand line strewn with brittle stars, star fish, and sea mice (I rescued all the ones that I could see were still alive, popping them back into the now-gentle waves, but it was a hopeless task!) after the storm takes all the shades of warm amber orange, the palest coral pink, sandy yellow and woody charcoal from a beautiful stranded star fish. It's called \u003cstrong\u003eafter the storm.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eI've loved spending a year being inspired by the sea and the treasure we find near it as we've walked along our favourite stretches of the Suffolk coast. A closer look, however, reveals the trees are busy preparing for the next season and the sweet chestnuts that arch above the track running alongside the field are already dotted with plump buds. Tinged with rich, deep red and warm ochre, in sharp contrast to the bark and the grey sky framing them\u003cstrong\u003e, \u003c\/strong\u003eand\u003cstrong\u003e filled with promise\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother day, another walk, and the light couldn't be more different! The low winter sun is welcome, even if it barely manages to rise above the hedgerow and as it grows in strength, by mid-morning the ancient oaks on the east side of the meadow are glowing, \u003cstrong\u003ebathed in gold\u003c\/strong\u003e. And while I can live without the grey skies, the rain does come with benefits and a good long walk around the meadow and the adjacent woodland with a keen eye revealed the exact treasure I'd been hoping for this month! Sometimes we find only field mushrooms that are quietly stunning in their velvety taupe and chocolatey brown tones (and were the inspiration for one of our oldest repeatable shades '\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.meadowyarn.co.uk\/collections\/walk-out-to-gather\"\u003ewalk out to gather\u003c\/a\u003e') but not quite the jewel tones I had in mind for this month's #YarnFromTheMeadow skeins but I needn't have worried! Almost immediately, I spotted a little pop of purple under a hazel tree. I'm not sure exactly what variety it is - possibly a Lilac Fibrecap? - but against the mulchy woodland floor and next to the fallen leaves, it provided the perfect inspiration for \u003cstrong\u003ebeneath the understory\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second shade was a dream find too! I'm pretty sure this is a flame shield mushroom and if it is, it's also a fairly rare find for Suffolk. According to my research, they are usually found in clusters on large rotting branches, but I happened across a small patch of mossy grass that was proudly showing off a handful of these beauties. Just the thing for my yellow\/orange loving soul... We've been settling into our new home\/work base for a month now, and the morning dog walks and afternoon strolls are just as inspirational and restorative as the meadow we knew and loved for the past eleven years. The view from our house is huge - across small pastures, edged with stately trees, and all under the most enormous sky! There are birds of prey, deer, foxes and so much more but the thing that caught my eye as I stared out at the view on this particular afternoon was the merest hint of a sundog rainbow. If you enlarge the photo you can just see a shimmer of violet, pink, and yellow amongst the glowing clouds. I couldn't resist playing with a rainbow for the very last in the series, and \u003cstrong\u003esundog \u003c\/strong\u003eis a gorgeous blend of soft lemony green, palest creamy lemon and those little flashes of pink and violet, apricot and yellow.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second shade has a much more 'December' feel to it because the 'anticyclonic gloom' that the weather reporters have been so keen to tell us all about has cast its shadow over us too. There's always 'colour' to be found, though, even in what looks to be a black and white image at first glance. We meet characters from previous novels in the series but it's entirely possible to read this as a stand-alone book. The ground has been frozen solid underfoot on lots of my early morning dog walks, which is fabulous because we are well and truly in mud season here and the only thing that gives us respite from the wet legs and muddy feet is proper frozen ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI crouched by a frozen puddle at the meadow entrance while the dog pottered around breaking up the ice (and eating chunks of it!) and I spotted a crystalline oak leaf, frozen just beneath the surface. I've picked out all the shades of russet and golden-brown along with the shadows beneath the ice and the subtle lavender and indigo hues in the frozen puddle. I'm prone to discovering, forgetting, and rediscovering authors and characters, and stumbling across a brand new series, a whole rich new seam of murder and mystery, is a good day indeed! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the things I love about a recurring character is the way the author can build a richly complex world and a nuanced (often complicated!) personality for them to inhabit. We find out what they like and dislike, they have back stories and lives outside of the current case\/mystery, we know what they order at the bar, what music they listen to, their relationship woes, and whether they stop off for a curry or a fish supper on their way home from a gruelling day of crime solving! It all makes for lots of palette inspiration and I'll be using it all to dye a single shade each month inspired by one of my favourite detectives.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI'm going to build this into a collection like a 'part work' magazine so you can pick and choose your favourites, or collect the whole series. Each edition will be dyed on the same two yarn bases; pightle | fingering\/4ply (both 100g full size skeins and 20g mini-skeins) and bray | lace so there are lots of knit\/crochet  possibilities! You could purchase a single mini-skein from every release and knit or crochet a blanket or throw, maybe use pightle and bray held together for a shawl, or purchase a sweaters-worth to knit a garment inspired by your favourite detective... the possibilities are many and varied!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, who is going to be providing the inspiration?
