The ground has been frozen solid underfoot on lots of my early morning dog walks, which is fabulous because we are well and truly in mud season here and the only thing that gives us respite from the wet legs and muddy feet is proper frozen ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI crouched by a frozen puddle at the meadow entrance while the dog pottered around breaking up the ice (and eating chunks of it!) and I spotted a crystalline oak leaf, frozen just beneath the surface. I've picked out all the shades of russet and golden-brown along with the shadows beneath the ice and the subtle lavender and indigo hues in the frozen puddle. As I sit here editing photos and dreaming up names for this month's \u003cstrong\u003emacro~meadow\u003c\/strong\u003e shades it is a remarkable morning by virtue of the lack of wet stuff falling from the sky but it's a rare dog walk that hasn't been in driving rain and involved a fair bit of paddling and a lot of mud lately. This too shall pass (the sooner the better!) but in the meantime I am trying to find the beauty in the waterlogged landscape. And, of course, I didn't have to look very hard to find the perfect inspiration in the rain...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first shades is called ~ a moment suspended ~ and it picks out all the rich chestnut brown, warm taupe, soft grey, and dusky pinks in a photo of a perfect raindrop suspended from a hedgerow twig. Within the raindrop there's an ethereal inverse image of the trees in front of me and the sky captured in that tiny droplet is luminous. The shade is called ~ a moment suspended ~ and it's dyed on hoo | sock, so perfect for socks but also great for shawls and scarves and lightweight garments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second shade is ~ while it was raining ~ and it's a rich, saturated combination of all the russet, ochre, plum, chestnut, and oak tones in the rain soaked twig. The hedgerow was filled with these tiny magical vignettes and it lifted my rain-soaked spirits as I walked the dog on another wet morning! The blackthorn blossom is abundant, the hedgerows have a green fuzz, and the bird song is amazing but it's still pretty muddy underfoot and we've had a couple of sharp frosts this week! As I walked along the meadow on a greyish, still-soggy morning earlier this month, avoiding ankle deep puddles, and mud-slicked tractor tracks I found myself drawn to the lichen on  windfall branches and hedgerow dead wood. Such an amazing colour palette all in microscopic form. Obviously I then spent twenty minutes crouched in one of the muddy puddles I'd been trying to avoid, snapping as much detail as I could trying to capture all the glaucous green, blue-grey, zingy chartreuse, and mucky olive tones in these amazing organisms!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first shade is called ~ \u003cstrong\u003emore than one thing\u003c\/strong\u003e ~ and it combines al those ethereal cool green hues with warm olive, almost-chartreuse and that hint of rust. The first swallow [tick], cow parsley in the verges [tick], the ancient oaks 'greening' in the woods [tick], bees bumbling around in the lawn [tick], bluebells [tick]! It feels like the landscape is transformed in a flash but if you stop and look closely it's all happening in super slow motion and I've been noting the progress of a straggly sycamore as I wander down to the meadow every morning. The buds really are the perfect spring palette of palest citrine, zingy chartreuse, soft apricot, copper pink and a hint of toffee chestnut. With a milky blue morning sky visible through the canopy it was irresistible...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth shades are dyed on \u003cstrong\u003ecade | singles\u003c\/strong\u003e, our blend of superwash merino wool and linen and the soft halo and subtle texture are perfect for spring knits. And this year has also had plenty of rain, gusty wind, chilly evenings, and grey skies amidst the perfect, if fleeting, moments of warm sunshine and still air. In one of those moments Chris snapped a beautiful peacock butterfly, taking a moment, resting its wings, soaking up the sun. I obviously couldn't resist using those rich rusty oranges and soft browns, the hint of periwinkle, and the buttery, lemony yellow tones as inspiration for a subtle variegated shade riffing on peacock wings.
